The second monitoring session for butterflies in the intervention areas of the LIFE ShepForBio project has also come to an end. We are enthusiastic about the variety of species found. Among these, of particular conservation interest, we observed the Maculinea arion, a butterfly protected at European level by the Habitats Directive (Annex IV). The main threats related to the decline of lepidopteran species are the progressive reduction of grasslands, the abandonment of pastures and the consequent natural dynamics of afforestation.
With the ShepForBio project, we work to prevent the preservation of many of these species which, although not yet classified as ‘endangered’, are suffering from the transformation of their habitats.
