Goals
RESTORATION OF TARGET HABITATS
Improve the conservation status of 192 ha of H6230*, 225 of H6210* and 75 of H5130; clearing and removal of the shrubs and forest regeneration will directly affect 79 ha of H6230*, 193 of H6210* and 73 of H5130. Other interventions will involve planting of local native essences and reducing the impacts of off-trail use.
SUPPORT FOR EXISTING FARMS
The project will provide support and training actions for the farms participating in the project. Additionally, pastoral infrastructure will be implemented in the intervention areas to facilitate better and more sustainable pasture management.
DISSEMINATION OF BEST PRACTICES
The project will disseminate best practices for managing pastoral landscapes, related to opportunities and problems for grassland habitat conservation. These best practices will be tested within the project and in other LIFE projects.
DEFINITION OF MANAGEMENT MODELS THROUGH GRAZING
For each area of intervention, a specific Grazing Plan will be defined as a technical tool to identify objectives, tools and management best practices for conserving natural habitat values and promoting profitable grazing animals management.
PROMOTION OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND PASTORALISM
The project includes the establishment of a shepherd school with the goal of training at least 24 new shepherds in four years. These shepherds will work to restore and preserve the project’s target environments.
The main objective of the project is to improve the conservation status of three types of grassland habitats recognized as being of Community importance by the Habitat Directive (Habitats 5130, 6210*, 6230*). The project aims to achieve this through interventions to restore grasslands, support the development of present livestock activities and the establishment of new ones, including through the creation of a school for pastoralists. The ultimate goal is to promote grazing as a tool for sustainable and lasting management of these environments.
