On 14 April, the D.R.E.Am. Italia team took part in the regional meeting of the Regions4Climate project, held in Piombino and dedicated to adaptation to climate change in coastal habitats. The event provided an important opportunity to exchange views with other regional organisations on strategies for protecting dune environments, in line with the objectives of LIFE terrAmare.
During the morning session, the pilot project for the protection and restoration of dune habitats at Perelli, developed as part of Regions4Climate, was presented. The presentation highlighted the effectiveness of Nature-based Solutions and the use of integrated dashboards for analysing meteorological and marine data – essential tools for supporting management decisions and restoration actions. Subsequently, participation in the working groups facilitated a direct exchange between local stakeholders on the main challenges and solutions relating to habitat protection and the maintenance requirements of restoration projects. This opportunity for dialogue helped to share practical solutions for the effective and ongoing management of coastal habitats.
The day concluded with a visit to the pilot dune restoration project carried out as part of Regions4Climate, as well as to the restoration works completed around 15 years ago in the Sterpaia dunes. The results achieved in the past have provided a solid basis for improving current techniques, making interventions more targeted and efficient, particularly in light of the main pressures to be addressed – both natural, such as coastal erosion, and human-induced, including trampling and unregulated use. The data collected provide valuable support for optimising the actions planned under LIFE terrAmare, particularly at sites in Tuscany such as the Padule di Bolgheri (Site IT5160004) and the Feniglia Dune and Orbetello Lagoon (Sites IT51A0028, IT51A0026), contributing to long-term conservation measures based on scientific evidence.
