September was the last of three months in which field surveys were conducted to collect data on insects belonging to the order Orthoptera, which includes the species of animals commonly known as crickets, grasshoppers and locusts.
The grassland habitats covered by the LIFE Shepforbio project are particularly suitable environments for the presence of these species and the identifications, also made with the aid of the stereomicroscope, are confirming their high species richness.
The first results provide further confirmation in favour of the conservation of these habitat types; by taking action to conserve them, a multitude of species, some often little considered, are protected.
